Do You Need IELTS for AUSTRALIA AHPRA Streamlined Pathway?

If you’re a nurse planning to apply for AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) registration through the Streamlined Pathway, you might be wondering:
“Do I need IELTS or any English language test for AHPRA?”
The answer is — Not Always!
Let’s break it down for you.
✅ No Need for a New IELTS/OET/PTE Score If You Meet These Conditions:
AHPRA has now allowed an English language exemption for eligible applicants under the Streamlined Registration Pathway.
To be eligible, you must have:
✅ IELTS / OET / PTE score taken after 2017
✅ Used that score to work in one of the recognized jurisdictions listed below
✅ Either still be currently working as a nurse in one of those countries or else maximum year gap allowed upto 1 year.
🌍 Recognized Countries (Jurisdictions):
You are exempted from retaking IELTS/PTE/OET if you are currently working as a nurse using a score taken after 2017 in any of the following countries:
- United Kingdom (UK)
- United States of America (USA)
- Canada
- Ireland
- Spain
- Singapore
So, if you’ve worked in one of these countries after 2017 using your English test score and still continue to work there, you don’t need to submit a new English test score for AHPRA.
⚠️ Important Clarification:
Just having a test score is not enough.
You must have used the test score to work in one of the eligible countries, and you should currently be employed as a nurse there.
Examples that are NOT accepted:
🚫IELTS score taken after 2017, but never used for migration or work
🚫IELTS score used to migrate but you returned to India before 2 years and are not currently working in an eligible country
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. What if I took IELTS in 2018 but stayed in India?
No, it will not be accepted. You must have used the score to work abroad and currently be working there
2. I went to the UK in 2019 with OET and still work there. Is that accepted?
Yes! If the score was taken after 2017 and you’re still employed in a recognized country, you are eligible.
3. What if I used my score to study but not work?
Only those who are currently employed as a nurse will qualify. Studying alone may not be sufficient unless you also worked after studies.
4. I worked in Dubai but hold a PTE score. Is that accepted?
No. Only the specified countries (UK, USA, Canada, Ireland, Spain, Singapore) are eligible under this rule.
📝 Final Thoughts:
This change in English language criteria has made it much easier for nurses who have already worked abroad after 2017 to obtain their AHPRA license without the stress of retaking language tests.
If you qualify under this pathway, you can fast-track your dream to become a Registered Nurse in Australia!
