Understanding the AHPRA & ANMAC Process for International Nurses

Australia is one of the most sought-after destinations for qualified nurses looking to advance their careers, experience high standards of healthcare, and enjoy an excellent quality of life. However, to practice as a nurse in Australia, international applicants must meet national registration and immigration standards.

This involves two critical steps:

  • AHPRA – Registration to practice as a healthcare worker in Australia

  • ANMAC – Skills assessment for those applying for skilled migration visas

At Eduint4u, we guide internationally educated nurses through both these processes with clarity, professionalism, and personalized support—so you can focus on your goals while we manage the steps.

, we guide internationally educated nurses through both these processes with clarity, professionalism, and personalized support—so you can focus on your goals while we manage the steps.

Step 1: AHPRA – Your Official Nursing Registration

The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) is responsible for registering all nurses who want to legally practice in Australia. Your registration ensures that you meet the national standards for clinical safety, ethical practice, and professional competence.

Requirements Include:

  • Valid nursing qualification (with transcript & course outline)
  • Evidence of current or previous nursing registration
  • English language proficiency (IELTS, OET, PTE, TOEFL – meeting AHPRA standards)
  • Police clearance certificates
  • AHPRA-format CV and employment history
  • Identity and verification documents

If your qualifications are not deemed substantially equivalent, AHPRA may direct you to complete the Outcome-Based Assessment (OBA) — a two-part exam process (MCQ + OSCE) designed to evaluate your knowledge and clinical readiness.

Once approved, you will be added to the AHPRA register and officially licensed to work as a nurse in Australia.

Step 2: ANMAC – Skills Assessment for Skilled Migration

If your goal includes migrating to Australia through a skilled visa (such as subclass 189, 190, or 491), you must apply for a skills assessment through ANMAC (Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council).

ANMAC Evaluates:

  • Your educational background
  • Registration and good standing as a nurse
  • Relevant employment experience
  • English proficiency (minimum scores differ slightly from AHPRA’s)
  • Document authentication and compliance with visa criteria

It’s important to note that AHPRA and ANMAC are separate. You can apply for both independently, depending on your goals. AHPRA is for licensing; ANMAC is for migration.
