Australia Important Update: Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is Coming to ImmiAccount from 18 June 2025

As part of its ongoing commitment to improving cyber security and safeguarding user data, the Australian Department of Home Affairs is rolling out Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for all ImmiAccount users starting 18 June 2025.

This update is crucial for anyone who uses ImmiAccount to manage visa applications, immigration processes, or correspondence with the Department of Home Affairs. Whether you are a new student applicant, a migration agent, or a family member applying for a subsequent entrant visa, you must be prepared for this change.

What is Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)?

MFA adds an extra layer of security to your online account by requiring two or more verification steps to confirm your identity. Instead of only relying on a password, MFA requires:

Something you know – your password.

Something you have – a code generated by an authenticator app on your mobile or computer.

This approach helps protect your ImmiAccount from unauthorised access, especially in cases of stolen or compromised passwords.

What’s Changing from 18 June 2025?

Starting 18 June 2025, all new and existing ImmiAccount users will need to:

Set up MFA during account creation or at their next login.

Use MFA every time they log in or make changes to their account.

Have the ability to reset their authentication method directly in their ImmiAccount if needed.

This is a mandatory security upgrade, aligning with Australian Government cyber security standards.

How Can You Prepare for MFA?

To ensure a smooth transition, you can take the following steps right now:

1. Install an Authenticator App
Install a trusted authenticator app on your mobile device or personal computer. Recommended apps include:

  • Google Authenticator
  • Microsoft Authenticator
  • Authy
  • LastPass Authenticator

These apps will generate time-based one-time passwords (TOTPs) that refresh every 30 seconds.

2. Verify Your Email Address
If you haven’t accessed your ImmiAccount in the last 6 months, log in and verify your email address. This ensures you can receive account recovery links or reset codes when needed.

3. Familiarise Yourself with the Process
Starting 18 June 2025, detailed, step-by-step instructions on how to set up MFA will be available inside ImmiAccount. Make sure to read and follow them carefully.
